There are more non-drivers than drivers among the membership and it is not always possible to arrange car shares for everyone. In these instances, members should consider using public transport (there are favourable subsidies on rail and bus routes for senior citizens) or sharing taxis to get to u3a meetings or events.

Wherever possible, Interest Group Leaders and other convenors should try to organise activities and meetings close to public transport routes.

Where there are sufficient numbers of members traveling to a u3a-organised event some distance away or not on a public transport route, it may be more economical to hire a coach at a reasonable cost per person. Payment for coach hire must be made in advance as costs are fixed (i.e, not dependent on numbers) and once the booking has been made, it will not be possible to give refunds.

Members should be mindful that there is no obligation for car drivers to offer lifts. Where a car sharing arrangement has been made, passengers should be prepared to make a contribution to the cost of fuel.

To ensure there is consistency and fairness, the Committee recommends that each passenger contribute 10p per mile – the mileage calculated from the start of the journey or the muster point. If the driver is uncomfortable accepting a contribution from passengers, he or she may wish to donate it to the u3a’s Social Fund. As car sharing is a private arrangement, these recommendations are for guidance only.

Advice from the Third Age Trust states that car drivers offering lifts to other u3a members and accepting money toward fuel costs will not be compromising their car insurance policy, although drivers may wish to check what their policy covers. Any claims arising from an accident or injury while travelling in a car are covered by motor vehicle insurance and not by the u3a’s Public Liability Insurance.

Non-members of the u3a can sometimes take part in day-out trips.

The Committee has agreed that members may bring a non-member as a guest, provided he/she is a partner, close relative, or friend. For the guest, this would count as one of the two trial attendances allowed to non-members. If, on the other hand, the guest has already used their two u3a trial events, then they would have to join PRD u3a before being eligible for the trip. Non-members participating in up to two trial attendances are covered by the u3a Public Liability insurance in the same way as members, see the current insurance cover in the links above.

In most cases there will be a limit on the total number of attendees for organised day-trips. Members (and any guests) will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and a reserve list will be kept once the trip is fully booked.

All u3as are committed to the furtherance of fair treatment and the absence of discrimination in all their activities, and strive to achieve a membership which reflects the composition of the community they serve.
